TBT Rolando Santana

It's been a while since the last time I wrote to you, and now  that I´m finally back doing what I love, I want to talk about one of my favorite designers: Rolando Santana.
Born in Cuernavaca Morelos (Mexico), he grew up surrounded by  textures, colors and beautiful designs thanks to his mother, who ran a small dressmaking business for selected clients.
Inspired by the art of designing and  pattern-making, Rolando honed his talents, spending his  free time at his mother´s workshop, and finally in 1991  he moved to New York City convinced  of his dream about becoming a fashion designer.
He joined the Mercy College where he studied International Business, and then entered the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT).
He worked as Assistant and Designer for Jeremy Spencer; in 2005 , Rolando joined the brand Donna Morgan as Creative Director and in 2006  he took the position of
Vice President at Kellwood Company, which manages various brands like Rebecca Taylor, Briggs NY, among others.
In 2009, the designer finally decided to concentrate on his own brand: Rolando Santana.

His latest collections, inspired by two of the best  mexican contemporary artists (XVIIIc. - Present ) have been terrific,  this because the designer takes the essence of the artistic concept, capturing it into modern, unique and feminine pieces.



Frida Kahlo was the protagonist of the collection Rolando Santana Spring - Summer 2014 Ready to Wear, which was presented during the last MBFW NY. Most viewed colors were pale pink, canary & pale yellow, lilac, periwinkle, ivory and white in addition to prints and  floral details in silk ,also embroidered in sequin and lace.
The designer created a new atmosphere about Frida Kahlo, respecting and honoring every characteristic and detail of the artist, capturing her style in elegant and easy to wear pieces.

Organic fabrics like silk, leather and wool were used for the outfits , which were conformed by small midi skirts and dresses with straight cuts and ruffle details, vests that simulated the famous harness of Frida Kahlo, tailored jackets and coats with scoop necklines.
The discrete  embroidered flower details in some coats and dresses were beautiful and perfectly elaborated.

 Must Have: I definitely have to choose the canary dress with the flower details on the  scoop neckline, it´s a simple an elegant piece and the color is perfect for a natural look.

Ha pasado un tiempo desde la última vez que escribí para ustedes, y ahora que por fin vuelvo a lo que más amo  quiero hablarles acerca de uno de mis diseñadores favoritos: Rolando Santana.
Nacido en Cuernavaca Morelos ( México),  creció rodeado de texturas, colores y diseños hermosos gracias a su madre, quien dirigía un pequeño taller de vestidos para clientes selectos.
Inspirado en el arte del diseño y la confección, Rolando perfeccionó su talento ocupando los tiempos libres en el negocio de su madre, para finalmente en 1991 trasladarse a la ciudad de Nueva York decidido a realizar su sueño de convertirse en diseñador de moda.
Ingresó al Colegio Mercy donde estudió Negocios Internacionales, y después concluyó sus estudios en el Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT).
Trabajó para Spencer Jeremy como  Asistente y Diseñador; en 2005 se unió a la marca Donna Morgan como Director Creativo y en 2006 tomó el puesto de Vicepresidente en la Compañía Kellwood, la cúal maneja diversas marcas  como Rebecca Taylor, Briggs NY, entre otras.

En 2009,  finalmente el diseñador decidió concentrarse en su propia marca: Rolando Santana.

Sus últimas colecciones, inspiradas en dos de los mejores  artistas contemporáneos  (siglo XVIII- actual) mexicanos han sido sublimes, y es que el diseñador logra captar la esencia del concepto artístico plasmándolo en piezas modernas, únicas y femeninas.

Frida Kahlo fue la protagonista de la colección Rolando Santana Primavera - Verano  2014 Ready to Wear, que se presentó durante el pasado MBFW NY. Los colores más vistos fueron el rosa pastel, amarillo canario y pastel, lila, azul lavanda, marfil y blanco, además de estampados y detalles florales en seda,  también bordados en lentejuela y encajes.
El diseñador renovó la atmósfera que representa a Frida Kahlo, respetando y haciendo honor a cada característica y detalle de la artista, plasmándolo en piezas elegantes y fáciles de llevar.
   Telas orgánicas como la seda, cuero y lana fueron utilizadas para los conjuntos, que se conformaron por pequeños vestidos y faldas midi  con cortes rectos y ondulados, piezas que simulaban el famoso arnés de Frida Kahlo, chaquetas entalladas y abrigos rectos de corte redondo.
Lo más sublime de esta colección fueron los discretos detalles floreados  en los cuellos de ciertos abrigos y vestidos.

Must have: Definitivamente el must have de esta colección es el vestido de seda color canario con detalles floreados en el cuello; es una pieza sencilla y elegante, no necesita de un sin fin de accesorios porque la atención está en el vestido.

Rolando Santana's Fall-Winter Collection 2014- 2015, also presented during the last NY Fashion Week, was inspired by two well-known works of the famous Mexican artist Gabriel Orozco: "La DS", a peculiar and beautiful recreation of the classic French Citroen car was perceived in the lines and silhouettes of each piece, while "Stained Glass"  a photograph of a tree in the middle of the night taken in 1998 clearly shows the shapes of irregular roots  in sequin details and prints.
Most viewed colors were ivory, black, different shades of gray, white and pale blue.
A blend of class and sophistication defined this collection, which consisted in  suede and shearling coats , discrete but sexy transparencies, shiny details embroidered in lace and leather,
The models wore a discreet makeup and loose hair.

Must Have: This winter is going to be really cold! we´re going to need the  shearling coat! yummm.

La Colección Rolando Santana  Otoño- Invierno 2014- 2015, también presentada durante el pasado NY Fashion Week, fué inspirada en dos conocidas obras del famoso artista  mexicano Gabriel Orozco:  "La DS", una peculiar y hermosa recreación del auto clásico francés Citroen se percibió en las siluetas y cortes de los conjuntos y vestidos, mientras que  "Vitral",fotografía de un árbol en medio de la noche tomada en 1998 resalta claramente en los  detalles en lentejuela y prints con  formas de raíces.
Los colores más vistos fueron el marfil, negro, diferentes tonalidades de grises, blanco y azul pálido.
Un mezcla de  clase y sofisticación definieron esta pasarela, conformada por abrigos de gamuza y piel de oveja, transparencias discretas y sexy,  detalles brillantes en conjuntos de cuero y encaje.
Las modelos llevaron un maquillaje discreto y el cabello suelto.

Must Have: Este invierno va a ponerse realmente frío, necesitaremos el abrigo de piel de oveja ! miammm.

Hace unos días Rolando Santana presentó su más reciente colección durante el Fashion Week NY, que hasta ahora ha sido un alboroto, muy pronto subiré algunas de las mejores pasarelas! Hoy terminó el Fashion Week NY :(, ¿Están listos para la semana de la moda en Londres?
